One of the most popular player bet markets is who’ll win the MVP award. Not surprisingly, quarterbacks dominate. A passer has won the award for 10 straight years. That seems to suggest that if you’re planning to make a bet, you want to put your money on a signal caller.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the favorite, according to the latest odds from MyBookie Sportsbook. Is he the best option, though? We’re taking a closer look at Mahomes as well as three other options that might be a good bet to win the award.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Odds: +700
It’s not surprising to see the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback leading the odds to win the MVP award in 2023. Patrick Mahomes and this team are coming off a Super Bowl win against the Philadelphia Eagles and are searching to cement themselves as a dynasty with another. Mahomes has helped his team go 64-16 in games that he starts. On top of that, he threw for 5,250 yards in 2022 to lead the league last season.
There’s a lot of consistency on this team from the coaching staff to Mahomes and the weapons around him. He’s the safest bet entering the year.
Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
Odds: +1100
Jalen Hurts took the Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl where they eventually lost to the aforementioned Chiefs. However, he put together one of the best Super Bowl performances from a quarterback that we’ve seen in a long time. He got it done on the ground and in the air, which is what makes him a threat for the MVP this year. Stats and winning games are the two most important factors, and Hurts can get both of them in 2023. With A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith on the outside, a great offensive line protecting him and an explosive offensive scheme, Hurts could be in line for another monster season.
Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets
Odds: +1600
Despite winning two MVP awards in the past five years with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers and his former team headed for divorce. He has since switched to the New York Jets, giving them an opportunity to make a run at a championship.
Rodgers should have some good help with Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb coming over to join him from Green Bay along with his former offensive coordinator in Nathaniel Hackett. Beyond that, the team added running back Dalvin Cook to the back field. The pieces are in place for this team to make a run and if they do, Rodgers will get a lot of credit.
Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
Odds: +2000
Justin Fields is a big longshot, but he might have the stats to join the conversation. The Chicago Bears quarterback is an electric runner and if his passing improves, he could be a Pro Bowler in 2022. Last season, Fields piled up 2,242 passing yards and another 1,143 rushing yards while accounting for 25 touchdowns. The Bears front office did get him some more help with the additions of D.J. Moore and Chase Claypool. If he improves and the Bears make the playoffs, Fields might be in the running to win the award.
