Before his darts career, Anderson used to work as a builder. News said he still enjoyed doing Do-It-Yourself projects during his spare time after turning pro.
Anderson’s journey of delving into professional darts was a unique one. He used to manage a pub, the Wellington Arms in Somerset, where legendary darts figures like Trina Gulliver and Mark Webster were known as regulars. It’s fun to note that beer-drinking culture is strong within the darts community, with 250,000 pints of beer consumed by the audience during tournaments.
Anderson honed his darts skills there, observing how these legends played. He then began his career in the sports by competing in the British Darts Organization. His breakthrough in this new path came with his victory over John Walton at the Welsh Open. in 2001.
In 2011, Anderson faced a tough period in his life — losing his younger brother, Stuart, to a heart attack at the age of 35. The following spring, his beloved father, Gordon, who was crucial in inspiring his darting journey, also passed away. Anderson named his newborn son after his father and brother to honor them.
Anderson’s Achievement Over the Years
In 2015, Anderson earned his first PDC World Darts Championship. It was a historical moment in the darts scene as Gary faced Phil “The Power” Taylor, a 16-time champion, for the first time in the final. Anderson considered it an honor to share the stage with The Power and moved to tears when winning, surprising not only himself but also the audience.
“It’s always an honor to be on the stage with that man. He’s one of my biggest heroes, and to get one over on him is even better,” Anderson said.
His remarkable journey includes championship wins in prestigious events such as the PDC World Championship, Premier League Darts, and the Players Championship. Anderson is still in excellent form after winning his last 18 competitive darts matches and consistently achieving remarkable averages. His best was 104.54, and in four out of six matches at Alexandra Palace, he averaged well over 100. He’s one of only four players to beat Taylor in a world final.
A recent highlight in Anderson’s career was his victory in Players Championship 25 on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. He defeated Josh Rock 8-4 in the final, claiming back-to-back ProTour titles in Barnsley.
