He was born in Brussels on January 14, 1991, to parents Patrick and Els De Bruyne. His father Patrick is a former footballer and his mother Els is a former Olympic swimmer. He has two brothers, Dennis and Sven, who are also footballers.
He started playing football at the age of six with R.S.C. Anderlecht in Brussels. He played as a striker before switching to midfield when he was 10 years old and became interested in the likes of Michael Laudrup, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Zinedine Zidane which helped him make up his mind.
